March 27: Teenager banks on Brokeback Truck

Matthew Kennedy nabbed the 56-year-old pickup at an auction thinking he was getting his first set of wheels for a bargain.

Then the 16-year-old saw his truck on a clip from the Oscar-winning film Brokeback Mountain.

The Grade 11 student decided to turn his first-car bargain into a college fund and is auctioning off his 1950 GMC pickup on eBay.

The film was shot on the foothills of Alberta, about a two hours’ drive south of Calgary

“This flat black truck was featured in the beginning of the movie driven by character Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal). It is seen when Jack first meets Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger) and again when the characters part after their summer on Brokeback Mountain,” Kennedy writes in the eBay description. “It is seen again when Jack meets future wife Lureen Newsome (Anne Hathaway).  This all-metal truck has its original engine and is in superb running condition.  This truck was purchased from High Meadow Productions who were in charge of the transportation for the movie.”

Kennedy’s intention was to restore the black, three-speed truck because he liked the style of that era. When the Oscar madness began he decided to sell it.

At last check there were six bids for the truck, raising the price to over $17,000 CAD. Included is a certificate of authenticity and proof that the truck was used in the film.

Kennedy plans to save the money for college.
